Zain Naghmi became the Super Smash Bros. Melee player to beat after his Genesis 7 double win against Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma, and now he’s signed with a new team.

Golden Guardians, the esports team for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, has signed up Zain - marking their first jump into the Melee scene.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Zain wrote: “So excited for my future with this amazing team. 2020 Melee is looking good.”

Zain previously signed with Panda Global in April 2018 but parted ways with the team in November 2019, being a free agent since.

It wasn’t Golden Guardians only new signing, with David “DogDog” Caero also signing up to compete in Teamfight Tactics.

The former Hearthstone pro has won numerous big championships, including Masters Tour 2019 in Las Vegas. He joins a number of autobattler players on their roster, including Andrew “TidesofTime” Biessener and Rebecca “Becca” Cho.

The organisation, founded in 2017, now has teams across League Of Legends, Apex Legends, World Of Warcraft, Teamfight Tactics and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Zain’s acquisition might be a promising sign the Melee community is still in healthy shape, after many huge tournaments like EVO 2020 have taken the title off the line-up.

The next big Smash tournament is Smash Summit 9, which takes place from Thursday 13th February in California, US.
