BBC Toast of Tinseltown: Matt Berry on dating EastEnders star rumours and first acting role at the L

You might recognise Matt Berry from his role as braggadocious boss Douglas Reynolds from the IT Crowd, the vicious vampire Lazlo from What we do in the Shadows or simply know him as the man with the smooth voice from off the telly.

He is not one for searching for fame and he reportedly refused to do things other actors and comedians might do to raise their profile, such as going on panel shows or the talk show circuit.

This means that Matt might be less well known than some of his colleagues and co-stars such as Noel Fielding, Richard Ayoade and Katherine Parkinson.

The actor is maybe more recognisable to some for his distinctive voice, which has featured on Moneysupermarket ads and Absolute Radio than his cult comedy hits.

One of these comedy hits is the critically acclaimed Channel 4 series Toast of London where Matt plays a hapless, talentless and ageing actor convinced he is on the cusp of making it big.

Matt is now reprising this role for the new BBC2 series Toast of Tinseltown.

Although he's a very private person, Matt has spoken about his early years as an actor with his first start in the profession coming when he moved to London.

He got a gig as a performer at the London Dungeon, where he would show up hungover and scared tourists for a living.

“You just had to convey this historical stuff to these people in the scariest way that you could in costume,” Matt said of his time working at the tourist attraction.

“And you had free run. I used to try all sorts of things. And that’s where the timing and all that came from, because you had a show every 15 minutes all day, all week.”

He spent two years in the Dungeon.

“You learn so much by doing those kinds of jobs,” he said.

“You learn that stillness can be your best weapon.”

Matt has certainly channelled his experience into some of his roles, most recently as a vampire in What We Do In the Shadows.

Although Matt has opened up about some things in his past, his dating life remains an almost complete mystery.

The only time he's been connected to anyone romantically in public was back on a night out in 2016.

The tabloids spotted him having dinner and partying with ex-EastEnders actress Charlie Brooks, sparking rumours that the two might be closer than just friends.

Despite reports that the pair were at an exclusive club in Soho until 5am together, not much has been said about the two’s relationship since then and it's not clear if they were ever romantically involved.

Matt has been very guarded with his private relationships, so his wider dating life remains shrouded in mystery and that seems to be the way he likes it.

Matt is in Toast of Tinseltown on BBC2 on Tuesday at 10pm.
